Why Monitor?
Cracks often appear in buildings and civil engineering structures.
This is usually a symptom of distress within the fabric materials
used in the construction. Cracks are often of little significance
and can be easily repaired but sometimes they are the first sign
of a serious defect which may effect the functioning and stability
of the building.
Monitoring the changes in the width of the cracks over a period
of time helps diagnose the cause of the cracking and determine
whether it is significant.
The Survey
Structural crack monitoring can be incorporated into our subsidence investigations.
The survey consists of measuring the width, length, frequency, direction
and location of the cracks then monitoring them over an agreed period
of time. Although we normally use the
Avongard and disc monitoring techniques, we can also install deep
seated datums to help record the movement of subsiding
structures, which allows level monitoring to take place.
